READING DEVELOPMENT BOOKLIST AND BOOK-LEVEL ASSESSMENT
Reading books at the right level of difficulty is critical for a reader's development. Institute curriculum includes two components to help direct students to the best books at their level: an individualized Book-Level Assessment for each child and a Reading Development Booklist. The assessment provides guidance about which books are appropriate for a child's current reading level. The Reading Development Booklist contains hundreds of book summaries, organized into categories by level of difficulty. Taken together, these two tools provide parents with substantial support for selecting books for their child's independent reading through every stage of development.
The Institute's Reading Development Booklists ensure that children read books with excellent literary value and an appropriate level of challenge at every age. Booklists for beginning readers contain books with decodable words they can use their phonics skills to read as well as a rich trove of picture books and chapter books for reading aloud. For older students who have achieved fluency, the booklists contain fine children's literature that portrays age-appropriate characters, plots and situations and embodies positive values. Reading these books will have a lasting impact on children and instill a lifelong love of reading. |
