This guide was created by the Institute of Reading Development — the organization that has been building skilled, enthusiastic readers since 1970. Over 56 years, we've served more than 3 million families across the United States.

Our approach is different: we focus exclusively on reading. Not math, not science, not test prep. One subject, taught by expert reading teachers trained in a curriculum refined over five decades. We are exceedingly selective with our teachers, hiring fewer than 3% of applicants.

The 5-stage framework in this guide is the same model our teachers use every day — adapted here so you can see your child's reading development through expert eyes.
